CHAPTER 11

“Did you enjoy lunch?” I asked, leaning over to kiss John before I set down the groceries.

“Not as much as you, apparently.”

He sounded irritated, so I turned around and saw the scowl on his face.

“What did I do?” Perplexed, I placed the cheese and meat in the refrigerator.

“You and Crawford were friendly.”

I grabbed a beer and a bottle of wine, placing the beer on the table in front of John, then uncorked the bottle.

“I’m not sure what that’s supposed to mean. I work for August, and yes, we’re friendly.”

“Do you always go to lunch with the boss?”

I poured a glass of red wine, taking a sip, then sitting across from John. He was leaning back, arms crossed, his eyes glaring at me.

“We discuss business over lunch, John. You know, like you do with your boss.”

“My boss doesn’t look like she wants to fuck me.”

I almost spit out my wine.

“What the hell? I’ve had lunch with many bosses and clients before! What are you accusing me of?”

“I saw you two when I walked in. Crawford was touching you!” He sat up.

“He wasn’t touching me.”

Was he?

“His arm was behind your chair, and his fucking hand was on your shoulder!”

August had his arm over my chair when he was animated or excited about something, but I would have felt him touching me.

“I don’t know what you saw, but August was not touching me.”

“You two still seemed too fucking friendly!”

Was he jealous? Normally, I would be happy he still got jealous, but he was accusing me of wrongdoing.

“John, you’re ‘friendly’ with your boss and other co-workers, and I don’t instantly think you’re up to something. Give me some credit. What has gotten into you?”

He stared at me, then slammed back his beer, scraped the chair as he got up, and walked away.

I poured myself another glass of wine to the top of the rim, then took a few sips while I counted in my head to calm myself down. He would rather be an asshole and walk away than talk to me. I didn’t do anything wrong. He owed me an apology. August and I were only friends.

I took my glass into the living room and sat down next to him. He didn’t even acknowledge my presence as he watched the pre-game show.

“You owe me an apology.”

“What the hell for?” He turned to me, eyes bulging.

“For insinuating August and I are something more than just friends as if his gorgeous model girlfriend didn’t exist, and the fact I was remodeling their home. Oh, and don’t forget one important fact, I’m engaged! To someone who apparently rushes to unsubstantiated conclusions, from what? A five-minute interaction at a restaurant, where you were having lunch with a few female co-workers. When you and Pamela were working late after work, I wasn’t suspicious. When she sent you those inappropriate texts, I believed you when you said there was no wrongdoing on your part. I trusted you and didn’t accuse you of foul play. You owe me an apology.
